Back in the day, there were large and enthusiastic crowds that would follow Jesus. He spoke with an authority that was new and refreshing, and many people attached themselves to Him. But in reality, much of that attachment was superficial.
And so Jesus would sometimes hit the pause button on all of the excitement, and challenge the people to really think about what it meant to follow Him. Often times He would toss a parable (a short story with a lesson attached), like this one:
"Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you,” (Luke 14.28-29)
Jesus wants it to be clear that following Him will cost you.
Jesus wants you to understand the terms of being His disciple, and not to take it lightly.
“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:26)
This could be a tough pill to swallow... but what Jesus is saying is this: The difference between your love for God and your love fore even your dearest family members is as great as the difference between love and hate.
You are commanded to love your neighbors as you love yourself... but when compared to the love that you are to have for God, there is no comparison.
If Jesus is Lord of your life, then He is Lord of your marriage, your money, your family, your possessions, your future... He is Lord of everything.
Following Jesus may lead to other people rejecting you. Maybe even your own family members... or closest friends.
Accepting Jesus as Savior alone may allow you to ‘fly under the radar’ in the day-to-day interactions with the rest of your life. Accepting Jesus as Lord may altar things quite a bit. In fact... many people who receive Jesus at a church service or an event fall away from the faith because the cost of making Him Lord of their life is a price they consider too much to pay.
Count the cost.
Before you move on to the next step... consider this:
Does the cost of your commitment to being a true follower and disciple of Jesus change the way you think about what it means to be a Christian?
Why do we need Jesus as both Savior and Lord?
